The Federal Government today revealed it had organised what it described as a “major forum” on the future of Australia’s digital economy in the wake of the construction of the National Broadband Network. Communications Minister Stephen Conroy (Credit: Suzanne Tindal/ZDNet.com.au) The forum, dubbed “Realising Our Broadband Future” , will be held at the University of New South Wales in Sydney on 10 and 11 December this year and feature Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as a speaker.

There’s a very tried-and-true saying in the security world: “Security through obscurity is not security.” It is extremely common for users of technology to assume that “the bad guys” will not know how to break in, steal, hack, alter, or achieve whatever damage is in question. A similar belief is that “they wouldn’t be interested in my data.” People very, very commonly believe that they have “nothing of interest to a thief” on their hard drives.

Tip of the Week: Security Through Obscurity is Not Security

It seems like it’s getting harder and harder for spam filters to differentiate between true spam and regular emails.  There are times when legitimate emails get flagged while malicious content slips through the cracks.  As such, consumers might need to adopt some habits to ensure that they can spot scams without relying on their filters. Switched.com created a list of 10 Ways to Spot an E-mail Scam and I thought it would be good to discuss some of their suggestions ( click here to read their whole article).  The site also has an article about the top email scams which, although things are always evolving, is definitely worth reading. The first and most important warning sign is the request for personal information.  If someone is asking for your log-in or bank account number, it’s probably not safe to reply.  I have never had a legitimate business ask me for important information through email so make sure you verify the source of the email before you reply.

The fine folks at both HotHardware and PC Perspective have run the new ASUS P7P55D-E Premium motherboard through its paces, which has the particular distinction of handling both USB 3.0 and the up-and-coming SATA 6G through controllers by NEC and Marvell, respectively. Lucky for us, both sites’ tests came to similar conclusions. The Seagate Barracuda XT SATA 6G drive has almost zero improvement over SATA 3G, other than in some burst speeds due to the fancy cache on the 6G — the bottleneck here is the drive, not the controller.

Consider this one coming from Rumorville, however Phone Arena has reported a leak that supposedly Verizon Wireless will be offering among other netbooks – Sony VAIO P model for $299 with a 2 year contract.Considering that Sony is discounting this pocket VAIOs left and right (check your local SonyStyle store for pricing and SonyStyle Outlet), a $300 price tag would be a sweet deal for those who are looking to carry a sweet P with Windows 7 OS, 160 GB of hard drive (this thing really rocks with SSD though) and 2 Gigs of memory. There’s possibly a $100 rebate that may also apply to this deal, but don’t hold your breath too long, wait till this Thursday when Verizon will be announcing some planned line-up in NYC
