CherryPal beats OLPC to a $99 Africa Netbook

CherryPal just announced it’s Africa Netbook available for sale today through it’s website for a retail price of just $99, something that OLPC had promised years earlier and failed to deliver upon. While it is certainly not developed to live up to the specifications of the XO, the Africa Netbook does boast: 7-inch display 400MHz processor 256MB memory 2GB flash storage Linux or Windows CE 4 hour battery Their laptop is nothing groundbreaking here, but I feel that if somebody wanted to run an implementation today this would be a seriously be worth considering or at least using for a small test implementation. The price is certainly worth taking note of as this could easily be twice as many laptops for a developing nation or even for use in traditional classrooms.

Snow in Cambridge! Off to Cardiff!

It snowed throughout last night, what better way there is than to spend the day before touring UK with a snowy white Christmas here in Cambridge? Whoohoo! *fluffs* It had been about 8 and 14 years (if I remember correctly) since I last played with real snow. And it feels just like the morning of Christmas like a kid again

Student Pays Laptop Theft Forward

Absolute recently recovered a customer’s laptop after it was stolen from a Massachusetts dorm room. The story unfolded as follows: a few weeks prior to theft, the identified suspect’s own laptop had been stolen on the same campus. Laptopless and doubtful of its return (her machine was not equipped with Computrace LoJack for Laptops), the suspect decided to find a quick replacement – and an unlocked dorm room provided the perfect opportunity for some late night laptop larceny.

Apple Mac mini (2.53GHz, Autumn 2009) review

The latest Mac mini looks the same as its predecessor but has a faster CPU, more RAM and a bigger hard drive, among other spec bumps. It’s rather short on features compared to its Windows-based rivals, but Mac fans seeking a small machine for productivity tasks will probably be happy with it

Rip of the Week: Beijing Center for Chinese Studies (USA) Stolen Laptop Breaches Applicants

This week’s rather classic breach involves The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies, who notified applicants to its programs that their personal information may now be compromised due to a stolen laptop. According to the entry at DataLossDB , BCCS International Director Roberto Ribeiro sent a letter to at least one Attorney General (New Hampshire), alerting about the theft, after sending letters to all affected applicants. Intel vs. Microsoft and Antitrust: Lessons Learned (the Hard Way)

As we exited last decade, Microsoft was under fire from the Department of Justice and took a highly combative stance that it initially carried over into its dealings with the European Union.  After getting heavily pounded and fined, it shifted tactics and recently settled with the EU, reducing substantially its long-term risk.

What is the future of Microsoft Small Business Server?

I’ve just attended a briefing on Microsoft Server and the future of the Small Business variant was one of the things we discussed. There are a couple of issues with Small Business Server that make me question its future. One is that, at a time when cloud-based services are proving their ability to simplify computing for small businesses, Microsoft’s offering is more or less cloud-free.
