8 reasons why you should use anti-virus software with Windows 7

Whenever a new version of Windows comes out, I usually avoid buying from that first batch, since there always seems to be glitches to work out.  It appears that Windows 7 is no exception since it was shown to be vulnerable to 8 of the 10 “freshest” viruses circulating around the internet. SophosLabs used a copy of Windows 7 on a clean machine that was configured to follow system defaults without loading any anti-virus software.  Of the 10 viruses that they introduced to the machine, 2 would not operate correctly under the newest version of Windows

Over 1.1 Million Sugar Activities in the Wild!

In the New York Times article Nonprofit Laptops: A Dream Not Yet Over , we are teased with the suggestion that next month we’ll have the OLPC 1.5 in production, with double the speed and four times more memory than the XO-1. Before we get geek lust for OLPC hardware, I’d like to congratulate Sugar Labs on its software – the ever demure Walter Bender let it slip this week that his team has passed a very important psychological milestone: 1. I had been meaning to mention that already several weeks ago we exceeded one-million downloads from activities.sugarlabs.org

Hands-On With the Lightscoop Flash Modifier

We liked the look of the Lightscoop flash modifier we covered a couple of weeks back, so we tested one out. And while the camera-mounted mirror isn’t quite as easy to use as we’d hoped, it gives results way better than you’ll get from even the best built-in flash when used bare. The Lightscoop slides into the hot-shoe of your camera, making it only suitable for DSLRs which have a) a hot-shoe and b) a flash that is in the middle of the camera

HTC mulling entry into netbook market

As if the netbook market wasn’t already crowded enough, Taiwan smartphone giant HTC is reportedly considering entry and aims to release a model that “added “unique value” to current netbook offerings.” Company CEO Peter Chou himself was quoted as saying that HTC is “carefully looking into that category and how it can be part of that.” Well, I don’t think anyone would mind that–after all, competition is never a bad thing in this industry. But a lot of questions can be raised regarding HTC’s intention to enter the fast-growing netbook market: what will differentiate their offering from the dozens of other models already available in the market? Will it be bundled with an operator contract?

Asus prepping its guns for CES 2010

Come January of next year at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Asus is expected to showcase a whole slew of exciting new devices along with a few old (already known) ones that also incite interest as excellent choices for mobile computing. Among those to be showcased are the company’s 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor powered netbooks, smartbooks and ultra-thin devices like their forthcoming Eee Reader and a few Google Android-based smartphones. Asus is also preparing 1.83GHz Intel Atom N470 netbooks but these aren’t going to be presented until CeBIT during another place and time

Philips Plasma 42" 42PF9630A/37 -7 Red Flash Code

LJ92-01200A(Samsung) power supply board has small on-board riser card that flashes green code- 3 flashes when plasma is plugged in and experiences no audio/video Accompanied by the red flashing 7 times code on front panel.(note when red front panel flashes 7 times the green power light goes off at this point) I inspect capacitors (the two 3300uf 10v ) that are notorious. They are not swollen/leaking and by all means appear perfect

Connection between Onkyo TxSR507 and Optoma HD200x projector

If anyone can explain the following to me I would be grateful :- I have my Optoma HD200x projector set to auto detect incoming signal on HDMI1 (HDMI2 not currently used) 1) If I connect my Sky HD box to my projector directly via HDMI, then the projector auto-detects a signal of 1920 x 1080 x 25hz 2) If I connect my sky HD box to my Onkyo TxSr507 (HDMI3 input – CBL/SAT) and then connect the TxSr507 to the projector via HDMI, the projector auto detects a signal of 1080i x 50hz There seems to be very little detectable difference between the output image from the projector for either of the above connection methods (although I have not watched extensively).

Tactile Transducer comparisons

Hi I’ve just ordered a set of Crowson Tactile Transducers from Kent Home cinema (The croswon TES100 and A300 amp) I was thinking that if we could get together with someone who has a buttkicker and maybe someone with another different system we could do some comparisons. I was quite impressed with the basic buttkicker system at Sevenoaks but am buying the crowson system blind and think it would be great if we could write up some proper thoughts on these systems for the forums. Anybody else out there interested
