Why bother with Google DNS (or any other third party DNS resolver)?

The web is hot with news of a new, free DNS resolver service powered by Google. A DNS resolver will answer requests from your computer or router and translate names (such as www.geekzone.co.nz ) into IP addresses such as 210.48.73.74 – the actual address servers are known by on the Internet. This is not the first third party DNS resolver server around – other well known services include OpenDNS and DynDNS Internet Guide

Lenovo, HP, Dell Integrating SDXC Readers in New 32nm Intel “Arrandale” Laptops

Don’t want to be obsolete before launch Most laptops and netbooks today come with a SDHC flash memory card reader. One of the major benefits of standardization is the ubiquity it allows. Will Chrome netbooks really be competitive?

Acer, which last quarter overtook Dell to become the world’s second-largest PC manufacturer, is known as an aggressive company. So it’s little surprise that the company’s chairman, J.T. Wang, vowed this week that Acer would be first to release a netbook using Google’s Chrome OS sometime in the middle of next year.

Preparing for the Big Presentation

Last Friday, the company vice president sprung a real surprise on me. When he came over to my cubicle, I was fully expecting to be admonished for one reason or another. Much to my shock and delight, he instead asked me to make a financial presentation to the board of directors at their next meeting

The last day of the term to end

Today is the last day of term! Two months of back to back hectic lectures, supervisions and lab, all over! well for 6 weeks of term break at least. And whoa was it hectic. Quite notably, the pace of classes going on here in the department are so fast it can be compared to almost a half a semester of teaching (5-6 months) in the polytechnic all covered over a span less than 2 months! It’s remarkable, yet something I am glad I survived even after spending sometime out from studying

Google vs. Microsoft: Is This a Stupid Fight?

I’m often convinced that most of the battles we see in the technology market are avoidable and largely counterproductive. A stupid fight is one that goes on between two companies that are more natural partners than competitors. What started me down this path with the Microsoft-Google battle is a post by Yaron Galai (it’s short and worth reading) about something Marc Cuban said on the textbook mistake most new companies make: not knowing what business they are in

Down San Francisco Market Street in 1905

Ah, good old San Francisco, one of my favorite cities in the world, only this showing how it looks like in the past, specifically set in 1905 before the big earthquake and fire of 1906. Well, besides the fact that this video is more than a century old and almost everyone you see in this video is not much among the living now, it’s still a blast into the past of how life was like back in the past which, in terms of organization with the exception of horse drawn carriages here and there, is not very much different from life we have today (and the exception of lack of vehicular control). Nevertheless still a fantastic city, through the eye of a camera on a cable car on this video.

DVD ripper Handbrake has seen an update. Lots of new features: 64-bit build Live preview Quality-based encoding We also get big promises: “There’s an old proverb in the video encoding world: “Speed, size, quality: pick two.” It means that you always have to make a trade-off between the time it takes to encode a video, the amount of compression used, and the picture quality. Tip of the Week: Change the Default Password!

I simply cannot help but continue to pull out some golden nuggets from the 2009 Data Breach Investigations Report from Verizon Business. One of the most remarkable findings of the report, based on actual breach investigations, was the “ease” of attack in many cases. The report found that, as we’ve always said as well, criminals target the low-hanging fruit.
