Clive Thompson on How the Real-Time Web Is Leaving Google Behind

When Michael Jackson died on June 25, millions of people flooded onto Google News to find the latest information about what had happened. The spike in traffic was so massive that Google suspected a malware attack and began blocking anyone searching for “Michael Jackson.” It’s a funny story, but it illustrates how the Web is changing. People increasingly turn to the Internet for up-to-the-minute information about, well, everything—blog postings about celebrity antics, status updates from friends, and pictures and videos of political events as they unfold, like the protests over the Iranian election

Views from Hubble’s Ultra Deep Field in 3D!

While trying to find more information on the meteor shower I was promised last night but didn’t see, I came across this gorgeous video on YouTube today. In the words of Tony Darnell, who scripted the narration and shared it with the world: I’ve recently discovered an animation that was rendered using the measured redshift of all 10,000 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image. I’ve written a short script that leads you through a quick history of both deep field images and this video ends with a fly-through of the Ultra Deep Field

The Laptop Sessions: “The Sound of Settling” (Death Cab for Cutie Acoustic Rock Cover Song)

For Death Cab for Cutie chords & lyrics, CLICK HERE ! By Chris Moore: This one gave me blisters on me fingers and numbness in me thumb (thanks to all the sliding up and down the guitar neck, the barre chords in the progression, and the fact that I didn’t really know the lyrics to the verses before playing it tonight), but it was all worth it, for all two minutes of it. And, quite a number of takes of this simple little song later, I know the lyrics by heart! “The Sound of Settling” is the second single from Death Cab for Cutie’s fourth album, Transatlanticism .  This is the album that my sister, Jaime, strongly recommended I hear if I hear nothing else from the band.  Seeing as how this is one of those “I’ve heard of them, but I haven’t heard any of their songs” bands for me, I picked it up on sale and enjoyed it.  Apparently, it was the first album that frontman Ben Gibbard felt was a truly serious, well put together record.

British costcutters say no to restaurants but yes to new mobiles!

Last week the BBC announced the results of an Ofcom review which suggests that we Brits are more willing to tighten the purse strings on our holidays and meals out than on spending on communication technology! The watchdog’s annual report says spending on mobiles, the internet and TV is regarded as a higher priority than almost anything except food. In a poll of 862 people, over 40% said they would save on holidays and eating out and 19% chose spending on mobiles.

Worldwide Photowalk

I recently became aware of the Worldwide Photowalk , it’s a brilliant idea – Photowalks are “a social photography event where photographers get together, usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town, to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other photographers” they are free to take part in and open to anyone – although, for practicality all walks are limited to a maximum of 50 people per walk.
