As the situation stands today, the answer to this question has got to be no. Increasingly, manufacturers are basing the functions of notebooks or tablets on connectivity with WiFi or mobile broadband networks and the lack of this connectivity would destroy most of the utility of the device

HP have added some fuel to the ongoing Adobe and Apple flame wars with a new video jointly created with Adobe and spoken by one of their marketing team. One of the things that does bug me on the iPhone is the lack of flash support. The reason that it bugs me is that it completely limits the viewing of websites like YouTube.

HP Slate Takes Aim at iPad for not running flash
As more and more tablet PC’s come on the market on thing becomes clear it makes no difference what the make is or what specs these great looking devices have, the price always appear to be around the $500 mark! However the chip maker Marvell has plans to launch a new platform that could mean a tablet being produced at just $99, obviously this is not going to be a top of the range tablet as it likely to me directed at the education market. The firm already has ARM based chip that is good for video, flash and even 3D graphics, so this device could easily take on the role of an e-reader and more.

Last night at the Microsoft Mix party in Las Vegas I happened across Michael Lehman, a senior architect, who told me he had been working for the last six years on a Visual Studio add-on called Feature Builder. This turns out to be the evolution of the very same project which Microsoft’s Jack Greenfield told me about back in March 2007 , at an architecture conference in the UK, though back then it had a more exalted status (in Greenfield’s eyes at least) – he described it as a platform rather than merely an add-on

I’m at Mix10 in Las Vegas where Microsoft has been showing off the latest preview of IE9 – you can try it here , provided you have Vista SP2, Windows 2008 or Windows 7. The two themes are performance, with GPU-accelerated HTML and graphics and a new Javascript engine that compiles code in the background, and standards support. This latter was not a surprise to me, as I’d heard the well-informed Molly Holzschlag praise Microsoft’s commitment to HTML5 at a workshop here on Sunday – see this earlier post

Windows Phone 7 is a managed code platform, we’ve been told at Mix10 in Las Vegas. Development is via Silverlight or XNA; there is no native API.

No native code development on Windows Phone 7 says Microsoft – so what about Flash?
I’m in Las Vegas for Microsoft’s Mix10 conference, where the developer story for Windows Phone 7 series is being unveiled. According to the press release, the tooling for Windows Phone 7 looks like this: Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone (free) Windows Phone 7 Series add-in for Visual Studio 2010 RC XNA Game Studio 4.0 Emulator Expression Blend for Win Phone CTP Essentially, you are meant to use XNA for games on the device, and Silverlight for other kinds of application. Another part of the announcement describes new services for developers – Microsoft Location Service to provide location information, and a notification service to “push information to the phone, regardless of whether or not an application is running”.

We had a great time with the Fujitsu T4310 recently, right up until the point where we broke the screen :-0… but that’s another story! I’m just back from QCon London , a software development conference with an agile flavour that I enjoy because it is not vendor-specific. Conferences like this are energising; they make you re-examine what you are doing and may kick you into a better place

Martin Fowler of ThoughtWorks gave what seemed an important session at QCon London , exploring the ethical dimension of software development with a talk called What are we programming for?. The room was small, since the organisers figured that a track on IT with a a conscience would be a minority interest; but Fowler always attracts a large audience and the result was a predictable crush

Engadget gave the new Fujitsu T4310 a great review, not for its looks, but for its great multi-touch tablet experience with Windows 7. The key feature for really useful and functional touch Tablet PCs is the inclusion of both the Wacom Active Digitizer Pen and the capacitive touch screen. The T4310 is one of the many new Windows Tablet PCs that include both! A touch screen on its own makes for a very limited Tablet PC experience .
