LG research reveals the need for consumer education re the Digital Switchover • 87% of West Country consumers claim to know what the Digital Switchover is, yet 50 per cent subscribe to the major myths • 30% of people claim they don’t know how to judge if a TV is ‘digital ready’ • 45% of people want to receive high definition programming as part of their digital package if it doesn’t cost more • ‘Silver 60s’ claim to be the most educated about the Digital Switchover and the most prepared Berkshire, 30 June, 2009 – New research launched today by LG, reveals that 87% of consumers in the West Country believe that they know what the Digital Switchover is, yet 50% still subscribe to the three most common myths concerning the change from analogue to digital broadcasts – including having to upgrade their home entertainment equipment, paying more for programming, and losing channels. Exeter, parts of Devon, Somerset and Dorset started to switchover from 6 May, while the remainder of the region will experience the transition between 1 July and the middle of August 2009. Although the majority of consumers are convinced they are prepared for the switchover, 45% are unaware of when the switchover is happening.

Viewers experiences of Internet connected TV’s (widget TV’s) will be limited due to the UK’s slow broadband speeds, according to Jim Wallace, the man in charge of Home Segment Marketing at ARM. Mr Wallace was particularly concerned about the recent Digital Britain report which laid down objectives for every home in the UK to have a minimum broadband connection speed of 2Mbps – which in his eyes was simply not fast enough. Mr Wallace spoke out after LG hired ARM to power their internet connected televisions

RegHardware gave it a stand up 80%: The moment you switch over to BBC HD, everything seems to snap into focus – colours are bolder and the increased level of detail is immediately obvious.

Pixel Qi was at Computex in Taiwan this week, demonstrating its 3qi display technology, which integrates e-paper attributes with LCD to create a versatile and potentially very energy-efficient screen. The idea is that with a flip of a button you can go from a traditional high-resolution colour LCD experience to a low-power black and white mode to an even more energy-efficient e-paper mode, which allows you to easily view text in bright sunlight.

Asus has announced the U series of laptops : the U20A, U80V, U50Vg and UX50V are claimed to benefit from low power consumption and decent battery life. The U20A boasts a 12.1-inch screen, the U80V has a nice round 14-inches, and the U50V — pictured here — and UX50V both sporting 15.6-inch 16:9 high-definition screens. All the screens are LED-backlit displays with light-in-motion, an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts screen brightness.

Intel has given the first preview of its next-generation Atom chip, with a more integrated design intended to improve performance and energy efficiency. The company also launched the beta of version 2.0 of the Linux-based Moblin netbook platform, with a new interface. The upcoming Atom chip, code-named ‘Pineview’, incorporates the memory controller and graphics chip onto the same silicon as the processor, a more efficient design that should lower costs for system builders, lower energy consumption and improve performance, Intel said

Dell are really going overboard with their Studio laptops, it’s not that they had added any special features or more specs, the changes are in the choice of artwork with the Studio fifteen and seventeen inch laptop buyer visiting the Dell website can choose one of a hundred and twenty designs. This takes the total cover choice to over two hundred, is there such a thing as too much choice? The artwork covers have been divided into different categories such as artists including Filth, OBVLN, Deanne Cheuk, Maya Hayuk and Korakrit Arunanondchai , patterns and plain colours.
