Rip of the Week: Beijing Center for Chinese Studies (USA) Stolen Laptop Breaches Applicants

This week’s rather classic breach involves The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies, who notified applicants to its programs that their personal information may now be compromised due to a stolen laptop. According to the entry at DataLossDB , BCCS International Director Roberto Ribeiro sent a letter to at least one Attorney General (New Hampshire), alerting about the theft, after sending letters to all affected applicants. The content of that particular AG letter is posted, as well as the letter that was mailed to victims.

Rip of the Week: Blagojevich Lawyers’ Computers Stolen, Evidence Gone

The saga of disgraced former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich continues, as the Chicago Breaking News Center reports that eight computers and a safe were stolen in a burglary at the law offices of Sam Adam and his son, Sam Adam Jr. One computer contained “undercover recordings from the sweeping corruption case.” Apparently the data was backed up (to other computers in the office that were not stolen), so now it’s more of a question about who has the data.

Tip of the Week: Ensure Comprehensive, Not Selective, Encryption

It’s becoming clearer these days that not only are organizations woefully “behind” on their data security projects, but even those who do take action tend to leave their infrastructure only moderately secure. An interesting article based on a survey from Information Week highlights some of the issues, not the least of which is that only 14% of survey respondents say encryption is “pervasive” in their organizations, and only 38% encrypt data on mobile devices. Furthermore, 31% characterize the extent of their use as “just enough to meet regulatory requirements.” Rather than bantering statistics around all day, it’s important to focus on the key issues (no pun intended), and a generally distasteful attitude toward security is clearly pervasive

Lenovo, HP, Dell Integrating SDXC Readers in New 32nm Intel “Arrandale” Laptops

Don’t want to be obsolete before launch Most laptops and netbooks today come with a SDHC flash memory card reader. One of the major benefits of standardization is the ubiquity it allows. Tip of the Week: Change the Default Password!

I simply cannot help but continue to pull out some golden nuggets from the 2009 Data Breach Investigations Report from Verizon Business. One of the most remarkable findings of the report, based on actual breach investigations, was the “ease” of attack in many cases. The report found that, as we’ve always said as well, criminals target the low-hanging fruit.

New Study: Only Half of CEOs Strongly Support Data Security Efforts

In yet another very interesting Ponemon Institute study, more than half of IT and security professionals worldwide believe their companies’ laptops and other mobile devices pose security risks, and only half of them have CEOs who are strong advocates and supporters of data security efforts. Kelly Jackson Higgins’ article at Dark Reading gives a good summary. And, in the United States, the situation is even worse, with only 40 percent of US IT and security pros believing their CEOs to be security supporters

ID titanium laser mouse – stunning design and a price to match

With Apple’s new wireless Magic Mouse grabbing headlines this month, and innovations such as the multi-functional GlideTV navigator and Nortek Duplus mini wireless mouse being rolled-out almost weekly, it seems the days of the humble mouse are long gone. Enter Intelligent Design’s titanium laser mouse – a hand-crafted device that is anything but humble (or cheap) and while it doesn’t have the smarts of Apple’s new offering, its certainly lays down a challenge on the design front.
