Uniquely Singapore Clipper

Uniquely Singapore Clipper Thanks to Benjamin and Lionel from STB for the invite to go on board the Uniquely Singapore Clipper ! We were out in the sea for almost 3 hours and I steered a boat for the first time in my life. It was somewhat similar to driving a car without power steering. This year is starting to get interesting.

The $31 Million Laptop

The Ponemon Institute, with sponsorship from PGP, has released their “Fifth Annual U.S. Cost of Data Breach Study.” As usual, the report is a treasure trove of great data (just like most people’s laptops are). The average cost per breached data record rose $2 in 2009, to $204.  That’s actually not too bad.

Motorola DEXT Review

Motorola DEXT with MOTOBLUR The Motorola DEXT is the “social” phone from Motorola and another SingTel exclusive phone, similar to what INQ is doing with it’s Mini 3G and Chat 3G. Motorola took a new approach and created its own service called MOTOBLUR . Just imagine Apple’s MobileMe and MOTOBLUR is the Motorola’s version.

Tip of the Week: Build a Disaster Recovery Plan, Part One

I’ve previously blogged a bit about data backup, but the topic is worth a bit of a closer look. In the context of disaster recovery, it’s also important to mention that there’s more to it than just data backup and recovery

Intel’s 2010 Core Processor Family

Intel Event At Ben & Jerry’s (Dempsey Village) Had a great time today at Intel’s event at Ben & Jerry’s at Dempsey Village. Firstly, free flow of Ben & Jerry ice cream (I only ate five scoops and drank a cup of coke float) and secondly was the ride on the Segway ! It was my first time riding the Segway.

Recommended 2-Bay NAS

I purchased my D-Link DNS-323 on the 1st September 2008 during Comex 2008. 3 days ago, my DNS-323 decided to give up on me, just after 1 year and 3 months! The warranty for the DNS-323 is only 1 year so my warranty had just ended! Argh! I thought I might try my luck, I wrote in to D-Link saying I am a blogger blah blah blah and a huge fan of D-Link, spending SGD$519 worth of D-Link products during IT Show 2009 and to see if out of goodwill, they can RMA for me. But if it fails, at lest I tried and time to hoot a new NAS.

Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB

My D-Link DNS-323 decided to give up to me 2 days ago and I have to find a temporary storage to transfer the data from my DNS-323. Unfortunately, I do not have enough space on my computer to store the data and my old external HDD has only 300GB and it is running on IDE. So I decided to get a new external storage as a temporary solution before I get a new NAS or if D-Link is reading this post would be so kind to RMA my DNS-323 (the warranty is over by 3 months).

This week’s Rip is another episode of the “unencrypted external hard drive” show. Thanks to lyger over at DataLossDB for the heads up. The Fresno Bee reports that an external hard drive was stolen, containing names, medical record numbers, and for some patients, ages, dates of birth, gender, phone numbers and other information related to their care and treatment.

Tip of the Week: Use a Third-Party Security Auditor

For businesses seeking to maintain a decent level of data security (said businesses being rare these days), an obvious first step is to keep your head pulled out of the sand. It is very common for upper management, and even mid- or lower-management, to essentially stick the head in the sand, and try to ignore security concerns. But for a small- or medium-sized business, this is almost always the case
