Reviews Coming in for Dead Man’s Cell Phone
The reviews are coming in for the Wayside Theatre production of Dead Man’s Cell Phone and so far we’re up 2 to 1. The Culpeper Star Exponen t liked the show and you can tell the reviewer gets Sarah Ruhl and our sense of humor. Every so often we hear a politician or a PR flack for a company spout off in such a way that would make a screenwriter cringe if they ever thought of including the line in a movie. When that happens, I bestow the Claude Rains Award for the hijinx. If you don’t know who Claude Rains is, he was the actor who played Captain Renault in Casablanca, and uttered the now famous sequence about being shocked to find gambling in Rick’s Casino, right before he was given his take of the night’s winnings.

BERGEN, Norway, June 14 (UPI) — The amount of time teens spend with TV and computer screens may contribute to some physical complaints, a researcher in Norway suggests. Researchers, led by Torbjorn Torsheim of the University of Bergen in Norway, suggest the length of time spent in front of television and computer screens, as well as ergonomic aspects of such activity, is more important than the specific type of screen activity when it came to increased teen back pain, headaches and other complaints. The study of 30,000 Nordic teenagers, published in the journal BMC Public Health, finds little interaction between screen-based activity types and particular physical complaints — although headache in girls was associated with computer use and TV viewing, but not gaming

BALTIMORE, June 14 (UPI) — Botox — the popular wrinkles-smoother — may ease nerve pain in certain patients, U.S. researchers say. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore suggest Botox — a toxin known to weaken or paralyze certain nerves and muscles — may help ease a painful and debilitating disorder called thoracic outlet syndrome, in which compression of nerves in the lower neck causes pain in the neck or head shooting down the arm with numbness and/or weakness in the limb and extremities

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, June 14 (UPI) — German, British, and Swiss researchers have proposed using the sense of smell to help diagnosis early Parkinson’s disease. Researchers, led by Dr. Silke Nuber of the University of Tubingen, Germany, said a fast, non-invasive smell test could also help in developing treatments for Parkinson’s disease.

I produce and direct theatre for a living. Along with the job you need a tough skin or a thick hide or some sort of way of shielding yourself from the criticisms you’ll invariably receive when you put a show on stage

COLLEGE PARK, Md., May 20 (UPI) — Women in Bangladesh who wear saris are literally wearing the answer to better health for themselves and their families, U.S. researchers said. One of the researchers, Rita Colwell of the University of Maryland in College Park, said women who use a sari to filter household water protect their households from cholera — and even protect neighbors who don’t filter their water.

I hope you take the time today and spend it in a quality with your mother or at least give her a call. Mother’s Day has new meaning for us today as we travel with our Mom through the journey that is her terminal illness. At the end of last year none of us ever thought we’d see her this Mother’s Day, but here we are today and we are all taking advantage of every minute we have together.

Stephen Hawking says the mathematical probabilities that aliens exist somewhere in the universe make it tough to deny that they do. But what’s great about this article is that he believes that based on our own history we probably shouldn’t be in such a hurry to reach out and communicate with them
