Building blocks for multimedia creation

There are so many great open resources that teachers can use legally in creating multimedia projects (reports, PPTs, web pages, wikis, etc.) with their students, but they take a lot of time to find and correlate. As a part of a recent project, I’ve started putting together “ media sets ” — bundled collections of photos, maps, diagrams, videos, etc.

Open-licensed music for your multimedia projects

Engaging your students in creating standards-based projects is a great way to differentiate instruction. But what to do when your students want to rip their favorite CDs to include music in their project? If you are posting the work online, this probably doesn’t fall under “fair use,” and it is important to model good copyright adherence with our students.

No new post tonight…

Hi folks, Jim Fusco here. I’m in good spirits tonight, but I want to explain a bit about my current situation, as there is no new cover song music video tonight.  I’ll try for Thursday. You see, the way things are now, I really can’t have too much fun outside of the weekend.  The fact is that I’m tired.  I can’t seem to stay up late anymore (although, I do) and be functional the next morning.  When I try to do things I’m interested in, like work on my music or work on the blog, then I start to slack off on work for my night job, which gets me in both a world of trouble and a BAD mood.  And then, that mood carries-over into my day job

Flipshare conversion to WMV

I’ve reported here earlier about an easy way to convert Flip camera movies to WMV files so that you can import them into Windows Movie Maker. Imagine my surprise last week when several folks in a workshop I was facilitating agreed to a Flip upgrade, only to find that after the upgrade to Flipshare v5, converting to WMV no longer worked. While I am still waiting for an answer about whether this is a “feature” or a “bug,”* I did find a way to un-upgrade and return the conversion functionality

The engagement gap: listening to student voices

“ Engaging the Voices of Students: A Report on the 2007 & 2008 High School Survey of Student Engagement ” from the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University is an important piece of research that I think everyone in education should read. High school drop-out rates are a national crisis caused in large part by a lack of student engagement. This report looks at what students say about school and engagement.

Why have a confusing TV remote when you can have a magic wand?

LG is aiming to make technology easier to understand.  A lot of us simply don’t have time to figure out every button and feature on our treasured TV set, and remote controls can be particularly confusing.  LG acted upon this insight by producing a remote control that interacts with the TV via your hand’s motion (for Wii fanatics, this is very much like the Wii wand).

“Ding Dong Ding Dong” (George Harrison acoustic rock cover song) – The Laptop Sessions: Jim Fusco’s 200th Video!

By Jim Fusco: And a Happy New Year to you- I’m Jim Fusco back for another year of the Laptop Sessions.  I’m also back with Number 200!  That’s right, tonight’s video is my 200th and it kicks off a brand new year of great acoustic cover song music videos here on the most popular music blog that isn’t corporately-owned…well, I can’t substantiate that claim… Anyway, I figured I’d kick the New Year and new decade off right with a New Year’s song in “Ding Dong Ding Dong”, a hit single off of George Harrison’s Dark Horse album.  If you’ve heard the original version of this song, you probably wondered why George’s voice sounded so raw and raspy.  No, he wasn’t taking vocal cues from his pal (and future Traveling Wilburys member) Bob Dylan.  He was actually suffering from a terrible break-up when his wife ran off with his best friend, Eric Clapton.  It forced the two friends to not speak for a long time (yes, significant others can change people and break friends apart, that’s for sure), but eventually they reconciled…once she and Eric broke up, too!  That’s a fairytale friendship story if I ever heard one. The title track from Dark Horse also features George’s gravelly vocals and it’s actually a nice tool he uses well on these somewhat bitter songs.  I mean, George was always one to write songs against the “establishment” (like “Taxman”, “Not Guilty”, and “Devil’s Radio”), but this time, it was a more personal fight.  One can only think that “ringing out the old and bringing in the new” has to be correlated to his estranged wife leaving the picture

ISTE is asking for input on next year’s keynote

ISTE 2010 (formerly NECC) is using a collaborative process to choose the keynote topic for next year’s conference. Imagine my delight at seeing Open Educational Resources (OER) near the top of the list! For those of you who don’t know much about OER, they are materials used for teaching and learning that are free from copyright restrictions or are publicly licensed for anyone to use, adapt, and redistribute. OERs are distinguished from other digital and/or free materials by the fact that they are open , meaning that they can be modified and redistributed freely by anyone.
