Child Porn Is Apple’s Latest iPhone Headache

A photo ostensibly showing a 15-year-old nude girl has appeared in an iPhone app, highlighting Apple’s inability to safeguard its application store from prohibited content. The image appears in the free app BeautyMeter, which enables people to upload photos that are then rated by others, who assign a star-rating to each other’s body parts and clothing. It’s much like an iPhone version of Hot or Not and many similar sites.

IPhone OS 3.1 Fixes Video Editing, Adds Bluetooth Voice Control

Apple has taken the latest build of iPhone OS 3.1 in its gentle hands, climbed to the roof of the Cupertino campus and lofted the update to the winds, shouting “Fly, my little one! Fly!” The beta version of the next update contains some new features, most of which will only be useful to 3GS owners. Developers at the Redmond Pie blog have played around with it and report the following tweaks: Video editing on iPhone 3GS wont overwrite the clip over the original when you are editing a clip. iPhone will now vibrate whenever you switch to the mode where you can move and arrange icons on the iPhone home screen.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband Users To Get Signal Boost

Vodafone mobile broadband customers, together with Vodafone mobile phone customers, will soon be able to benefit from stronger mobile signals around the home thanks to a special signal booster device. Thought to be particularly beneficial to those living in rural areas, the device, which is essentially a mini base station, works by routing calls through a users home broadband network. Internet TV’s Will Be Limited Due To Slow Broadband

Viewers experiences of Internet connected TV’s (widget TV’s) will be limited due to the UK’s slow broadband speeds, according to Jim Wallace, the man in charge of Home Segment Marketing at ARM. Mr Wallace was particularly concerned about the recent Digital Britain report which laid down objectives for every home in the UK to have a minimum broadband connection speed of 2Mbps – which in his eyes was simply not fast enough. Mr Wallace spoke out after LG hired ARM to power their internet connected televisions

BT has teamed up with Cashbox, a leading supplier of ATM cash machines in the UK, to offer BT Wi-Fi Broadband hotspots at Cashbox’s 2,500 UK cash machines. Oracle-Sun Update: Why IBM May Have a Reason to Celebrate

Oracle is an expert at acquisitions. Few do it better, but with Sun, it got a bunch of unique problems ( including a processor that no one seemed to want ), and they seem to be bleeding the value out of the company before Oracle can take control. Anecdotally, IBM, which had originally been trying to make the purchase, seems to be the biggest beneficiary of Sun’s customer attrition, suggesting that it may be getting much of the initial benefit without incurring massive cost and risk of making the acquisition.

Apple and the Enterprise: Change Is in the Wind

Apple, in sharp contrast to Microsoft, clearly thinks IT managers don’t provide any value in terms of determining their products or solutions. But, if you look at the result, couldn’t you argue that the result is a more desirable product? I wonder whether Microsoft made a mistake to focus on the needs of IT because it pulled focus from the user; the result has been products like Vista that weren’t that attractive to users and didn’t move well in business anyway

WWDC: Apple Continues to Drive PC Design as It Kills the PC

While Apple is far from the least expensive PC vendor and doesn’t really like corporate buyers much (though this may be changing ), it constantly amazes by doing a solid job of design and eventually solving most nagging problems. At its World Wide Developer Conference this week, it made a number of solid moves to improve its hardware line and begin ramping to Snow Leopard, Apple’s next Mac OS Minor release (I’m not sure it will ever again do a major release).
