Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s chief software architect, has shuffled the organization of several advanced research teams into a new “future social experiences” group called Fuse Labs. Fuse “will explore new social, real-time and media-rich applications and services that add value to existing products, or could be released on their own,” the company’s announcement said. Sony is announcing what looks like the flashiest new Windows 7 computer so far: A carbon-fiber laptop that’s only a half-inch thick and weighs 1.6 pounds. The company notes that the Vaio Series X is “roughly the width of a cellphone.” The Series X has a carbon-fiber chassis, 11.1-inch diagonal LCD display, solid-state hard-drive and a built-in 3G wireless radio. The $50 Nanoscopes appearing in stores now are used to play the company’s Nanovor science fiction trading game offline, in solo games or battling with friends who magnetically link their Nanoscopes to play. The players have two ways to play solo, plus four arcade-style mini-games, the company said.

Here’s a look inside the Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory opening Tuesday at the University of Washington. Paolo Feraboli, assistant professor of aerospace structures and materials, showed me around today in advance of today’s opening ceremonies. Best of all was a ride in a Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce brought in for the event.
Microsoft’s hardware labs are showing off all sorts of prototype devices at the User Interface Software and Technology conference this week in Victoria. The conference’s student innovation contest centers on a new pressure-sensitive keyboard the company has been demonstrating recently. Dozens of prototypes were provided to student teams, who are competing to see who can develop the most innovative interactions with the keyboard.
