Comcast digital update: Channel changes underway

After mentioning Comcast’s digital switch on Monday , I heard from several “expanded basic” subscribers who said they’re losing channels. What’s happening, according to spokesman Steve Kipp, is that Comcast has started converting blocks of channels 30 to 70 from analog to digital. As reported earlier , expanded basic customers will need to have some sort of Comcast converter box to get the digital channels, even if their TV has a digital tuner.

Kaspersky blocks Zango in court case that raises big question about Web filtering

There’s not much left of Zango anymore, but it was continuing to sue security software vendor Kaspersky for interfering with the way Zango’s downloaded software operated on people’s computers. Kaspersky treated Zango’s software as malware and “protected” users from it, prompting a lengthy lawsuit from Zango that appears to have ended with a ruling this morning by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

What’s in Pogue’s Travel Bag? Literally.

I’m always surprised at how many people seem to like reading about what hardware and software I use. Last week’s “Pogue’s Productivity Secrets” e-column, for example, got blogged and passed around far more than I would have expected. On a plane yesterday, I was flipping through an in-flight magazine and saw one of those “What’s in your bag?” photo features, where they have some celebrity dump out her purse and provide little descriptions (no doubt after careful pruning and arranging by a PR perso

Video: 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro hands-on

Radically overhauled last year, Apple’s MacBook line of laptops moved to aluminium construction, edge-to-edge glass over LED displays, and oversize multitouch-touch pads (with the exception of the lone £749 white plastic model ). The latest round of updates is more of a refinement than another revolution, but it adds some much-sought-after features, while lowering prices on many configurations. Notably, the 13-inch aluminium unibody MacBook has been promoted to join the MacBook Pro family — and CNET.com’s Dan Ackerman gets his hands on it in this video.

Pixel Qi 3qi hybrid LCD/e-paper display

Pixel Qi was at Computex in Taiwan this week, demonstrating its 3qi display technology, which integrates e-paper attributes with LCD to create a versatile and potentially very energy-efficient screen. The idea is that with a flip of a button you can go from a traditional high-resolution colour LCD experience to a low-power black and white mode to an even more energy-efficient e-paper mode, which allows you to easily view text in bright sunlight.

Intel has given the first preview of its next-generation Atom chip, with a more integrated design intended to improve performance and energy efficiency. The company also launched the beta of version 2.0 of the Linux-based Moblin netbook platform, with a new interface. Clean your Laptop Regularly

One of the things that most of us take for granted is the cleanliness of our laptop and other electronics.  But the truth of the matter is that a laptop is a dust magnet and the dust can cause the eventual failure of your notebook. What you need to do is take the time to clean your notebook regularly.  For most people, you will only really need to clean it once or twice per year.  But if you live somewhere that is extremely dusty, or if you have pets (think dog, cat, etc.), then you should do it a little more regularly because the pet hair can end up in the laptop as well.

Broken Laptops Make Good Desktop Computers

If you are looking for a new desktop computer but you don’t have a lot of room, I would suggest that you consider buying a broken laptop. Now, I don’t mean a laptop that isn’t working (which wouldn’t make a lot of sense), but rather a laptop with a broken screen.  Even if the screen isn’t working, usually the computer portion of the laptop still is, and as a result, usually you can get a really good deal

Apple preparing iMac, MacBook price cuts?

Apple could be getting ready to cut prices on iMacs and MacBooks . AppleInsider is reporting that Apple plans to introduce less expensive versions of its two most popular Macs at some point over the next several months. It’s not clear how much of a cut Apple has in mind, or whether it plans to offer more value at current prices, but Apple has apparently decided that it wants to hedge its bets against a proliferation of cheap netbooks over the last year or so, according to the report

Cheap Laptop Replacement Battery Alternative

One of the biggest complaints I have with laptops is the cost of replacement batteries.  For most of us with older laptops who want to use them when they are not plugged into the wall, we usually don’t get much time.  It is a fact of life that as laptop batteries age, their maximum life decreases as well. If you have looked for replacement batteries, you know that they aren’t cheap.  This can especially be a problem if you laptop is really old – the harder the batteries are to find, the more expensive they are. But there are alternatives.  If you watch the following video, you can watch to see how you can replace your old cells inside of your notebook battery with new ones.

Netbook or Notebook: Tough Buying Decisions

Unlike the olden days, we are now faced with many options when it comes to the size and power of our laptop.  You can buy everything from a small netbook (as small as a 7” screen) to larger than life notebooks that have screens over 18”.  With this buffet of laptops available to the consumer, how do you decide which one to buy? For me, the toughest decision is whether or not I should buy a netbook.  You see, I work at home and it would be convenient to have a computer that I could use away from the office (like at the kitchen table) or when we go on the road traveling.  I already have a desktop that satisfies my gaming needs (at the moment), and really I am looking for portability.
