Government issues $400m desktop tender

The Department of Finance and Deregulation today issued a three-year whole-of-government tender that will see vendors on a panel supply computer equipment to all Federal Government agencies. Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner (Credit: Minister’s Office) The whole-of-government tender has been issued as a response to a recommendation made by the Gershon review , released in 2008. It will see Federal Government agencies request desktop computer equipment from a single panel instead of issuing their own tenders, which would replace an interim panel set-up by the Department of Defence late last year.

NBN connections lag Rudd promise?

The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy has refused to say how many homes, if any, have been connected up to Tasmania’s National Broadband Network (NBN), something which according to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should have already happened. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (Credit: Commonwealth Government) In July last year, Rudd said the first homes would be connected “come the end of the year”. He added that it was to turn the services on “come July” of this year.

Alienware M15x

The good Amazingly powerful for a 15-inch laptop Highly configurable Adds 16:9 display The bad Configuration options can get expensive Far from portable Keeping the same look and feel as the recent 17-inch M17x version , the Alienware M15x is an imposing black slab of computing power that’s thicker and heavier than most 17-inch laptops. We love having high-end options such as Intel’s uber-powerful Core i7-920XM CPU, and it’s a plus that Alienware has finally gotten on-board the 16:9 display bandwagon; but if you want serious gamer options such as dual video cards or two hard drives, you’ll have to trade up the bigger 17-inch model. While it starts at a deceptively promising AU$2399, our review unit clocked in at AU$4113.90, which is a steep premium for a system with a single GPU and hard drive (not even a solid state one, at that).

Vic makes smart grid cash grab

in brief United Energy, Jemena, AGL Energy and Accenture have formed a consortium that hopes to see Frankston, Victoria, as the demonstration city for the Federal Government’s $100 million smart grid pilot. The idea of the funding was to create a pilot city in which to carry out trials to show how smarter, more aware energy networks can help Australians use less energy. The Federal Government released a tender for the pilot last October.

Touch set to take off on laptops and netbooks

Touchscreens aren’t new to PCs, but until recently they’ve been relegated to pricey convertible tablets for business, and to a lesser extent to slates–tablets without keyboards–used in niche markets (though I hear Apple is hoping to change that with some new device). Thanks to touchscreen smartphones, however, consumers have become accustomed to touch interfaces

Telstra split law faces Parliament in Feb

Debate on the legislation governing the potential break-up of Telstra’s operations and the reform of Australia’s telecommunications industry has been pushed back to the week starting 22 February. Stephen Conroy (Credit: Suzanne Tindal/ZDNet.com.au) The controversial and wide-reaching amendment — first flagged last year — was expected to pass through Parliament late in 2009. However, its passage was delayed as extraordinary events took over Australia’s political sphere in the Christmas period, including the struggle over Labor’s Emissions Trading Scheme

HP launches the $749 Mini 5102!

Many of us believed that the new HP netbook was going to be reasonably priced, by that we assume that it would cost around $400, but it seems that something has gone terribly wrong here somewhere because all of a sudden the new mini has a price tag of $749, although there is a lower model with a $599 price tag. The only thing that seems the separate the models is the operating system; the basic model comes with Windows 7 Starter, while the rest of the range came with Windows 7 Professional installed
